David M. Guinn Jr. is a partner at Hurley, Guinn & Singh. He has extensive experience representing citizens accused of criminal wrongdoing. His experience includes successful representation of individuals in trial and appellate courts at both the federal and state level.

Mr. Guinn represents individuals charged with all types of crimes across the state of Texas. He has obtained not guilty verdicts for clients on a variety of charges, including:

Mr. Guinn earned both his undergraduate and law degrees from Baylor University. After graduating law school in 1989, he spent three years as an assistant district attorney for Johnson and Somervell Counties. Mr. Guinn maintained a private practice in Crane, Texas until 1996 when he joined the Federal Public Defender’s Office for the Northern District of Texas—Lubbock Division.  In 1999, he joined his law school classmate Ruben Reyes and long-time colleague Daniel Hurley to form Hurley, Reyes & Guinn.

Mr. Guinn is a member of the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association, the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, and the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Educational Institute. He frequently lectures other lawyers at seminars throughout the State on various criminal defense strategies.

Significant Victories:
Trial
  • USA v. Chrane: Doctor charged with wire fraud in federal court. Result: Not Guilty.
  • USA v. Fullwood: teamed up with partner Dan Hurley to defend client of 67 charges, including mail fraud, wire fraud, money laundering, and bank fraud. Result: Not Guilty.
  • State v. Cortez:  Client charged with possession of over 50 pounds of marijuana. Result: Not Guilty. 
  • State v. Johnson: Client charged with aggravated assault of a prison guard. Result: Not Guilty.  
  • State v. Casel: Client charged with felon in possession of a firearm. Result: Obtained the first not guilty of an African American male in Tulia, Texas.
Appeal
  • USA v. Emerson: Secured first lower federal court ruling in the United States holding Second Amendment right to bear arms to be an individual right.
  • USA v. Estrada-Hernandez: Client convicted of assault during a prison riot. Result: Conviction reversed. 
  • State v. Gomez: Client convicted of aggravated assault of a peace officer. Result: Conviction reversed, and judgment of acquittal entered. 
  • State v. Long: Client convicted of intoxication manslaughter. Result: Conviction reversed, client granted new trial. 
  • State v. Grimaldo: Client convicted of possession with intent to deliver cocaine. Result: Conviction reversed.
